Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Provides an outline of the results of excavations undertaken in 1939 and 1940. Seven trenches were excavated through the ramparts. The sections were difficult to interpret but provided significant information concerning their structure. A scheme of five chronological phases can be proposed. Extensions of excavation into the interior provided important evidence for at least four roundhouses, along with associated surfaces and features. The pits of the so-called Western Complex were also sectioned but no clear evidence of date or function was obtained. A small but significant collection of Iron Age ceramic material, comprising early Iron Age decorated local coarseware jars and Wessex fineware, carinated, furrowed bowls with fragments of salt containers from Cheshire, are identified and discussed. Other finds from the excavation included a ceramic bronze working crucible and a polished stone axe. Includes | |||||||||||||
