Abstract:		 SO 002297. The defences of the Flavian fort, which were hitherto thought to have consisted of a clay rampart, are seen to be constructed largely of turf. The replacement of the Flavian defences by a new bank and stone walls is shown by stratified pottery recovered from the bank to be later than the Trajanic date assigned them by the original excavator; this confirms the redating proposed by Dr Grace Simpson. Structural details of the refortification were elucidated but no dating evidence obtained. Au
