Abstract:
[SH 4862]. G Simpson's reassessment of the pottery had already shown Antonine and 3rd-century occupation; excavation negated Wheeler's assertion of a Roman date for the infilling of the inner ditch and revealed long-term ploughing as the cause. The puzzle of the 270-year-long retention of the Flavian timber gate was partly resolved by discovering two more postholes (rectangular guard-chambers). The gate was refurbished and the ditches recut shortly before the abandonment of c 383. The samian report includes diagrams showing the density of occupation between AD 70 and 200; small finds and a few animal bones are reported.
