Abstract:
The quatercentenary in 1986 of the publication of the Britannia prompted this review of its achievements. The difficulties of compilation and of fact-checking in 16th century are outlined, and Camden's contacts and helpers are noted. The edition of 1586 is analysed in some detail and the originality and lasting quality of Camden's thought remarked upon, with special reference to coins, his remarkable collection of inscriptions (many well illustrated), and his maps. Not least, the Britannia inspired Drayton's Poly-Olbion (1612-13).
