Abstract:
This report presents the results of eight excavations carried out between 1984 and 1990 to investigate the Roman town of Braintree. The main conclusions are that the previously accepted model of town development and of the road network requires considerable revision. In particular, it has been possible to identify a group of minor roads within the town, suggesting a largely nucleated settlement, and an area within the town specifically involved with iron working. A remarkable find was that of a copper alloy horse and rider of probable third- or fourth-century date. Specialist reports include `The coins' by S Wallis (31), and `The Roman pottery' by Katherine Horsley (31-44) which includes `Samian ware' by W J Rodwell (34-6), `The potter's stamps' by Brenda Dickinson (36-9), and `Stamped mortarium from BH85' by K F Hartley (39). `The brooches' by H Major (44) is followed by `Copper alloy' (44-7), `Iron' (47-8), `Lead' (49), `Bone objects' (49), `Shale' (49), `Beads' (49), `Stone' (50), `Slag' (50), `Baked clay' (50), `Salt briquetage' (50), and `Building materials' (50-2) all by H Major. `The animal bone' by M D Smoothy (52-61). A discussion of the site concludes.
