Abstract:
This paper describes excavations at an installation erected in 1810-11 and armed with three 24lb cannon mounted on traversing platforms and sited to cover the town anchorage. It was manned only between 1811 and 1817, after which the guns were removed. Although it remained in military possession until the 1870s, it was not rearmed, and the remains of the batteries original gun emplacements, uncovered during the excavations, revealed surviving evidence of the technology used to service guns of coastal artillery of this period. There are details of `The pottery' by Helen Walker (213), `Brick and tile' by P M Ryan & S Godbold (213-14), and `Miscellaneous finds' by H Major (214-17).
