Abstract:
For various reasons, the theft of artefacts from private and legally protected archaeological sites is a poorly enforced area of national heritage legislation. However, a recent case in Northamptonshire demonstrates that persistence and collaborative work can produce effective results. The scheduled monument of Irchester Roman town -- which also covers the remains of a deserted medieval settlement and surrounds a historic farm complex '“ was targeted by illegal metal detectorists engaged in persistent looting. The investigation of the case, which resulted in the conviction of offenders, is described in this article. LD
