Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
This article outlines the background to and purpose of excavating mock trench systems as training for warfare, a practice which can be traced back to at least the end of the 18th century, and mentions several known sites in England that date from the First World War. Practice trenches are an example of a poorly documented class of field monuments of this time, for which archaeological fieldwork has an essential role to play in locating their remains. The archaeological evidence is also questioning the commonly held belief that troops were sent into battle ill-prepared. LD | |
