Abstract:
It is argued that the probate inventories for some of the Peculiar jurisdictions of York Minster provide clear evidence for the existence of numerous longhouses in poorer arable areas of the Vale of York. They also contain an unusual amount of detail about the functions and fittings of the byre-ends of such houses. Some surviving buildings, hitherto regarded as standard Vale of York types, are reinterpreted as longhouses.
