Abstract:
SE 606521. Excavations located the church just outside (pace tradition) the Roman fortress. Five phases were observed: a small rectangular single cell (10th century) overlying a 4th century mosaic; addition of chancel (12th century), later enlarged. The church was entirely rebuilt in early 15th century, later extended westwards, went out of use c 1550 and was demolished soon after. Specialist reports: architectural fragments, and evidence for metalworking (memorial brasses?) at the west end in 14th century. D G. With a historical commentary by D.M. Palliser
