Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Following an initial consideration of the theoretical contribution to Roman archaeology of R G Collingwood, the paper examines the themes which pottery has been expected to illuminate over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The methods used in extracting economic interpretations from raw archaeological data are examined, as are model-building and the concept of `proxy evidence'. Recently published examples of the use of ceramic data for economic interpretation are analysed, and the author suggests possible ways forward for the future. | |||||
