Abstract:
Review-article on the 13th Limeskongress volume (1983, published 1986: see 87/591) held at Aalen, of which 116 papers are published. The reviewer points to general trends of work in progress, conveys the flavour of the proceedings, and picks out some of the most significant developments for groups of Roman provinces. Military diplomas, military equipment, and the effects of frontiers were recurrent themes. The British section included comment on Roman reuse of pre-existing fortified places such as Hembury and Brandon; a reinterpretation of Stanwick; and a view of the military occupation of Wales as due more to mineral exploitation than strong native opposition. The rest of the article deals with other Roman provinces (see also 90/587).
