Abstract:
Explains various anomalies that pottery specialists have to live with, eg that Dales Ware was made in Lincolnshire, Parisian ware not by the Parisi, Rhenish ware is Treveran, Pompeian Red comes from Belgium, etc. 'Coarse fumed ware' is now known as Black Burnished; 'terra sigillata' has faded out in favour of samian (with small 's'), and so on. Though bizarre, the nomenclature is too well recognized to suffer redefinition now.
