Abstract:
A field walking survey in 1994, followed by limited excavation, revealed evidence of a Later Iron Age Belgic period cremation cemetery, associated with a contemporaneous iron bloomery furnace, at Little Poplar Farm, Ulcombe. The lower portions of some six pottery burial vessels were found, containing varying amounts of cremated human bone representing four adults and two young children. The furnace was roughly oval in shape and partly set into the clay subsoil; iron slag and fired clay furnace material were found during the initial survey. Two further, apparently isolated, Iron Age cremation burials were found in 1995, in the new graveyard of Ulcombe parish church, and 1999 about 160m south of the original find. Two Iron Age brooches and a few bone fragments were also found in the new graveyard in 2000.
