TQ 722605; TQ 71736047. After five years work the structural phases have become clearer. The ditched enclosure of early 1st cent AD was succeeded by the long ditch of Phase II. Rather fragmentary evidence for Phase III (c AD 55-65) shows the first true Roman-style occupation; the large bath building and probable workshops of Phase IV are dated c 65-120. The villa proper, as seen in some Phase VI (c 180-290) structures recently excavated, lies to E and SE of the bath-complex. The site of a rectangular tile-kiln was discovered during bulldozing operations nearby, and sufficient remains were recovered to indicate its plan and likely date. Tileries are uncommon in Kent and this one was probably producing tiles for the villa in Phase VI. | |||||||
