Abstract:
Excavations immediately N and E of the medieval Bishop's Palace revealed: part of the early 3rd century S wall and bank of the Roman city; a substantial Norman building (pre c 1150), perhaps a porch or a stairway like that of Canterbury's Aula Nova; the E wing of the Palace constructed in 15th century over the levelled Roman wall; and some post-medieval features. Finds included an AS sceat of c 725-30 and a fragment of AS interlace sculpture attributable to the pre-Conquest church. D G
