Abstract:
Describes Early Roman ditches, which may have represented the boundary of a military encampment; medieval and post-medieval activity would have truncated any structural remains so this theory could not be further confirmed. Gives a historical overview of the later development of the estate as an abbey and then as a country house with gardens, noting where the archaeological excavations uncovered evidence for these various phases. This consisted largely of garden features and the foundations of garden buildings and hot-houses. A small number of prehistoric finds were also discovered; these consisted of six probable Palaeolithic flint flakes from reworked fluvial layers and nine probable Neolithic or Bronze Age flint flakes recovered from later features.
