Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Explains the historical origins of misericords, first mentioned at a German monastery in the early 12th century. Many were lost during the widespread destruction of church fixtures at the time of the Reformation and in the 17th century. However, 120 examples survive at seventeen different churches in Kent. These are summarised in a table, with further details in the text. The range of themes and subjects shown in misericords is discussed, followed by sections on different themes and motifs, illustrated with Kentish examples. LD | |||
