Abstract:		 Reports on the evaluation in 2010 by the Canterbury Archaeological Trust of the site of a former post-medieval smock mill, St Martin's Black Mill, at St Martin's Hill in Canterbury, subsequently excavated in advance of redevelopment. Briefly discusses the documentary evidence for windmills in the Canterbury area, first recorded in the 12th century, before introducing the project at St Martin's Hill. Describes the archaeological context of the site and the findings of the fieldwork, followed by discussion of documentary evidence for the mill itself. The only identified features predating the mill were a pit of possible Roman date and a series of post-medieval quarries. It is unclear when and by whom the mill itself was constructed. Plans to dismantle it were in place by 1867, but the reasons for its closure are unclear. LD
