Abstract:
Reports on the results of investigations at one of three sites of suspected archaeological importance on the proposed route of the Birdlip Bypass. Features identified by aerial reconnaissance were excavated -- they included a penannular ditch, rectilinear and irregular ditched enclosures and numerous pits or post-holes. Occupation ranged from Bronze Age (or possibly Neolithic) to the first century AD. Finds reports cover: IA, Rom and post-med coins; brooches and other copper alloy objects; iron objects; stone weights; a bone pin; a clay loomweight; Iron Age and Roman coarse pottery; Roman brick and tile; and radiocarbon samples. Specialist contributions comprise: an `Analysis of non-ferrous metal objects' by Justine Bayley (59); iron objects; `The flint' by Alan Saville (61); `Worked stone' by F E S Roe (63--4); `The glass bead' [IA] by Julian Henderson (64--6); `Bronze Age pottery' by Anne Woodward (66--7); `Samian ware' by G B Dannell (67); `Samian stamps' by Brenda Dickinson (67--8); `Charred plant macrofossils' by Vanessa Straker (76--80); `The animal bone' by Keith Dobney & Deborah Jacques (80--4).
