Abstract:
Reports on excavations across the nine-hectare area of a proposed extension to the quarry. Evidence mainly related to a Late Bronze Age unenclosed settlement (similar to that found nearby in 1992), dated to the tenth-to eleventh centuries BC. The extensive settlement comprised at least thirty-six circular structures. Earlier features included a Late Neo/EBA hengiform ring-ditch and EBA ring-ditches. The following finds reports are included: a copper-alloy `Roman coin' by Nicholas Wells (58); `Metalwork' (58) and `Pottery' [multi-period] (57--64) both by Lorraine Mepham; and `Worked flint' by Phil Harding (64--6). Environmental evidence consists of `Land snails from hengiform ring-ditch' by Michael J Allen (66); `Faunal remains' by R Symmons (66--7); and `Carbonised plant remains' by Joy Ede (67--8).
