Abstract:
Representations in mosaic of metal canthari or cups, within the area defined by D J Smith as that in which mosaicists of the Corinian school were active, are discussed in detail. Stylistically the canthari fall into two groups and are perhaps atrributable to two artists. Seven of the fifteen canthari occur in well-preserved mosaics ascribed to the Corinian school, but the remaining examples cannot be attributed to this school with certainty since too little survives of the designs surrounding them.
