Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The blocked north doorway at Somerford Keynes church has been opened out and it is now possible to see that the plinth, jambs and imposts all pass through the thickness of the wall and that, originally, there was no interior rebate to house the door. The head of the doorway was not formed of through-stones, for behind the carved stone on the outer face is an arch constructed of six voussoirs. In a modification carried out before the ?16th century blocking, the doorway was given a rectangular shape by setting a flat lintel on the imposts; rebates were also cut into the jambs and a large threshold stone was inserted. The stepped moulding of the impost is comparable in its cross-section to the string-course of the earliest building at Deerhurst. An eastward continuation of the wall containing the door has also been revealed during clearing of plaster. R N B | ||||||||
