Abstract:
[SO 8729]. Excavation disproved the existence of an external corridor or ring-crypt, but much new information on the Roman-Saxon-medieval complex of remains was revealed. Roman pottery and flue tiles confirmed the suspected existence of a building whose material had been incorporated in the Saxon churches. Five, or even six, Saxon phases are postulated from the excavation evidence and standing remains. The stilted semi-circular apse is (pace Jackson & Fletcher 1961) later than the Period 3 church. Later additions included the two easterly porticus (burnt), then the ?10th century polygonal apse with pilaster strips, possibly contemporary with the massive, blocked chancel arch. Further work on the apse exterior, the NE porticus and the medieval/later burials is needed.
