Renewed archaeological activity and excavation has led to the identification of periods of expansion and contraction in the history of this town. The history of the Late Saxon town and its medieval expansion is considered and map evidence produced for the growth of suburbs. Amongst the other discoveries has been a sequence of town defences from their origins in the Late Saxon period through to their final renovation in the 1640s. | ||||
