Abstract:
Documentary evidence, from AD898, pointing to mooring for ships at Queenhithe has been confirmed by the find of wharves here. Lines of fairly insubstantial timbers were used to form trestles which formed a walkway with spaces for vessels between them. These were gradually consolidated until a dock was founded in the Middle Ages. Saxon coins, two skeletons and reused boat timbers were also found.
