Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The need to underpin the church prior to the large-scale extraction of coal in the area provided archaeologists with the opportunity to examine this apparently typical Yorkshire church. A cemetery occupied the site prior to the construction of the church, which was built in the late eleventh century. Over time a tower was built, nave and chancel lengthened and a porch and side chapel added. Kellington is now the most extensively excavated English church still in use. | |||||||||
