Abstract:
A description of the wet landscape around this Bronze Age site near Peterborough precedes a study of the alignment (a thousand oak posts in part forming an artificial timber platform over the wettest part of the fen). Deliberately damaged artefacts, pottery and bone appear to have been thrown off this platform, presumably as some form of `ritual' deposit. The timbers have been dated to between 1300 and 900~BC and the objects to the period from 1600 to 300~BC. This is taken to indicate attempts to maintain stability through repeated religious actions in a rapidly changing environment.
