Abstract:
A report on the recent excavations of part of the Roman amphitheatre which lies under the medieval Guildhall in London. A timber structure was built c AD~70 and replaced by a stone one c 120; this building seems to have continued in use in the fourth century. The skeletons of a bull and bear were recovered during the excavations. Saxon occupation of the site is attested in a series of timber buildings and possible ramparts. These were cleared to make way for the later Guildhall and associated buildings. It is proposed that this work offers an unrivalled opportunity to chart the transformation of a major Roman building into an important medieval site.
