Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
A report of the excavation of three massive medieval bridges recently unearthed in a gravel quarry; two of them are thirteenth century in date, the other Norman. Pier bases, a pier (of ashlar, bonded by iron cramps and with a rubble core) and timber piles of the thirteenth century bridges were all found. The Norman bridge is a unique find and displays unknown structural forms and jointing. Analysis of the timbers has shown that a range of woodworking tools were used. The bridges carried the London--Derby road over the River Trent. | |||||||||||
