Abstract:
The definition of the Neolithic world is challenged, with economy, architecture and material culture all proposed. It is argued that the nature of the monumental architecture provides the most convincing explanation for a new kind of Neolithic society. This is illustrated by studying a group of megalithic tombs: those at Clava in northern Scotland.
