Excavations at the SW corner of this 65-acre hillfort have shown the need to modify earlier views of the site, since not only do the stone defences now appear much earlier than had been thought, but they were preceded by a timber palisade on a similar line. Such a defence could be expected to date to c 8th-7th century BC, and support for this conventionally LBA date comes from two bronze disc-headed pins with early Hallstatt connections found in superficial layers in 1969. LBA metalwork was also found in the earlier excavations. A sizeable RB re-occupation of the site has now been firmly established by the discovery of much imitation samian ware, some of it in positions suggesting re-use of the hillfort defences. A substantial structure probably of this period, and a round timber house of EIA date will be examined further. On this site, as at many others, excavation is best done in the damp conditions of autumn/winter when soil colours show up more clearly. | |||||||||
