SP 344752. Further investigations (see 70/855) concentrated on the circular feature responsible for the curve of the E defences. It turns out to be an arena 107 ft across, its floor over 2 ft lower than that of the fort and surrounded by a timber retaining wall. Even at this depth traces of four earlier periods were recovered, the last being the barrack blocks of the first permanent fort. On abandonment the arena (which may have been a gyrus or training ground for horses) was filled with clean material. | |||||||
