Abstract:
[TL 7012]. Stripping in advance of bypass construction revealed a previously unsuspected Iron Age settlement site of two phases, first open, then enclosed. Sixteen circular huts of 10-13m diameter were investigated in the open settlement, together with four-post structures, pits and other features. In the later, palisaded settlement the houses (two investigated) were of different construction and rather larger, 16-18m diameter. Dating is so far based only on the absence of Belgic pottery. Bone material had not survived in the clay soil. A 12th-century medieval timber building was also investigated.
