Abstract:
Summarizes recent work on one of the largest Iron Age cemeteries in Britain, where more than 150 barrow-burials surrounded by square ditches will allow a horizontal stratigraphy to be derived. Most of the burials were in wooden coffins, and grave goods were of food, personal objects and dress fastenings. Orientation of graves became more standardized during the cemetery's two centuries or more of use. Bohemian and other Continental influences were clear, and La Tène III metalwork marks the end of the cemetery. A native farm overlay part of it, and some chalk figurines were found.
