Abstract:
Various excavations have revealed the defensive sequence. A ditch of pre-AD 120 at Dukes Place is on the same alignment as the landward wall of c AD 200. A shift of attention to the seaward side resulted in construction of a watch tower at Shadwell (late 3rd century), the addition of the eastern group of bastions, and the construction of the riverside wall (mid to late 4th century). Finally the SE corner of the city was strengthened in late 4th. D G
