Abstract:
Discusses the methodology adopted by the Monuments Protection Programme in selecting industrial monuments for statutory protection. An approach different from that applied to ancient sites was required, because there was no existing comprehensive database on which to base the evaluation. The work is supplemented by the Thematic Listing Programme. Progress with evaluation of eighteen industries is summarised, with more detailed reports on the coal and lead industries.
