Abstract:
Excavations aimed to evaluate the archaeological potential of two areas designated for future development. Work at Castle Farm revealed details of prehistoric settlement, the Roman fort and town walls, medieval occupation and defences, and the post-Roman extra-mural waterfront. At Pill Bridge Lane evidence of pre-Roman Iron Age activity, first century possibly military settlement and later Roman civil development supplemented information obtained in earlier investigations of this suburb, which once fronted the Foss Way. Finds are detailed in a series of reports, with an `Introduction' by Peter Leach (41--2). The prehistoric finds begin with Alan Saville on `The flint artefacts' (42--4), with items of copper alloy, lead, bone and stone divided into thematic groups, and including `The Roman brooches' by Sarnia Butcher (44). Pottery is dealt with in the next section. Ann Woodward covers `The prehistoric pottery' (52--4) (petrology by David Williams) and Peter Leach `The Roman pottery assemblages' (54--64). Peter Ellis discusses the medieval and post medieval periods in `The post-Roman pottery assemblages' (64--70). An appendix (71--82), detailing stratigraphy and occurrence of pottery finds, includes `A note on the petrology of some Iron Age pottery from the 1985 excavations at Ilchester' by David Williams (74) and `Samian ware from Castle Farm and Pill Bridge Lane, Ilchester 1985' by Brenda Dickinson (75--7). The results from both sites are placed within the ongoing programme of archaeological research, which has been published primarily in two monographs (Leach 1982 & 1992, and see also 92/1061.)
