Abstract:
Reports activity on and around a recently confirmed substantial Romano-British small town approximately one mile to the south east of the present day Shepton Mallet. This comprised a combination of trial trenching, survey work and full excavation in advance of development. Occupation in the form of building structures and cemetery evidence can be attested from the early-second century AD through to the fifth century. Small finds include a silver amulet cross with a chi-rho symbol, found in one of the graves and stylistically dated to the fifth century, which is one of the strongest affirmations yet of Christian burial in Roman Britain.
