Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Reports the results and interpretation of pollen analysis, undertaken at the University of Calgary (Canada). The timing of the inception of peat formation, at the transition from Sub-Boreal to Sub-Atlantic, makes the isolation of anthropogenic factors problematic. However, fourth-century BC land clearance, arable farming and livestock grazing is evident, with grazing predominant by the LIA. The Roman period showed an increase in recolonisation by trees and shrubs. From the Late RB era to the mid-first millennium AD grazing and farming activity increased, with more open, grassy land, and concomitant dry soil conditions. Post-medieval times witnessed increased grazing and clearing and c AD~1700 to the present day has seen a reduction in burning activity and human agency at work in the tree species constituents. | |||
