Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Summarises the results from archaeological excavations conducted in 2011 and 2012 by the Cambridge Archaeological Unit and the Department of Archaeology of Cardiff University, in advance of quarrying at Ham Hill. Geophysical survey revealed a large rectilinear enclosure within the development area, and evaluation trenching showed this to date to the Middle to Late Iron Age. Trenches were also opened at three locations across the hillfort ramparts in order to characterise their condition, age and construction sequence. Findings included considerable quantities of Mesolithic to Early Bronze Age artefacts, and evidence for an extensive ditched coaxial field system of the Middle Bronze Age. A further phase of Late Bronze Age activity preceding Iron Age occupation of the hill was tentatively suggested. Iron Age features included evidence for a domestic structure, pit clusters, and three human burials. Early Roman material was also recovered; this appeared to be associated with agricultural activity. LD | |||||||||||||||
