Abstract:
Work in advance of house building allowed the planning and limited excavation of prehistoric and RB sites. A possible Late Neo pit-ring henge was identified, while a ring-ditch, a crouched inhumation and a decorated chalk plaque were considered to be probably of EBA date. A pit containing Beaker material was also probably LBA. Early Roman occupation lay largely outside the areas examined. A Later Roman settlement was identified, where a wide range of environmental and artefactual evidence indicates a mixed farming economy. Parts of an outlying enclosure of the same date were examined. An early fifth-century gold coin hoard was also found. Separately authored specialist reports include: `The Roman gold coin hoard' by A Burnett (19); `Other Roman coins' by M Corney (20); `Objects of silver and copper alloy' by S M Duggan (20--1); `Sceptre head' by M Henig (21); `Iron objects' by M Fairbrother (22); `Metalworking slag' by Andrew Crocket (22); `The worked flint from pit 2' by P A Harding (22); `Portable stone objects' by A P Fitzpatrick & J I Millard (22--3); `Shale object' by Andrew Crocket (24); `The glass' by D A Allen (24); `The pottery from pit 2' by Rosamund M J Cleal (24--7); `The other pottery'(27--34) and `Ceramic building material' (34) both by J I Millard; `The fired clay' by Andrew Crocket (34); `The building stone' and `Worked bone and ivory' both on page 34 and both by J I Millard; `Animal bones' by J Egerton (35); `Assessment of the land mollusca' by Sarah F Wyles & Michael J Allen (36) and `Marine mollusca' by Sarah F Wyles (36); and finally a `Discussion' by Mick Rawlings, A P Fitzpatrick & Rosamund M J Cleal (37--40).
