Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Excavation in advance of development revealed evidence of occupation relating to the original establishment and settlement of the city of New Sarum in the thirteenth century AD. Parts of several tenements were examined, with the differences in land use in each tenement being clearly defined. A medieval building aligned along the street frontage had at least three rooms and an extension to the rear that contained a cess pit. The building continued in use in the later medieval period and examination of the contents of the cess pit deposited during this period revealed dietary evidence. There are separately authored notes on: `The metalwork' by Emma Loader (29)(mostly iron, some copper alloy and a little lead -- medieval); `The pottery' (medieval & some post-medieval) by Lorraine Mepham (29--37); `The ceramic building material' (roof tiles, ridge tiles, finials, floor tiles) (37--8), `The glass' (vessel and window) (38), `The stone' (38), `The clay pipe' (38), and `The worked bone' (possible medieval comb) (38--9) all by Emma Loader; `The leather' (shoe bits) and `The wood' (both on page 39 and both by Lorraine Mepham); `The plant remains' by Pat Hinton (39--45); `The marine shells' by Sarah F Wyles & Michael J Allen (45); `The faunal remains' by Sheila Hamilton-Dyer (45--51); and the `Documentary report' by John Chandler (51--7). | |||||||||||||||||||
