Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
A recent geophysical survey and re-assessment of field drawings made in the early eighteenth century by William Stukeley suggest that the currently accepted, and scheduled, location of the Winterbourne Bassett stone circle must now be considered in doubt. That such a monument once existed seems highly probable, but its identification with a scatter of stones at Upper Oxleaze may well be erroneous -- these being part of a naturally-occurring distribution without any deliberate patterning. It seems more likely that the stone circle in fact once lay to the south of a lane leading to Clyffe Pypard. | |||||||||
