Abstract:
Report on the excavation at Showell Farm, Chippenham of two Early Bronze Age ring ditches, one containing beaker-type pottery along with a broken Neolithic arrowhead and a human heel -bone, and a late-first- to second-century AD Romano-British field system with an associated trackway and agricultural activity. A heavily truncated, crouched burial, radiocarbon dated to between 170 cal BC and 60 cal AD; a further inhumation and two cremation burials, all undated; a drying oven and well; an assemblage of Roman pottery, mainly coarsewares but including some samian; brooches; and a coin of Domitian were also found.
