Abstract:
Excavation south of Salisbury Street revealed a sequence of Late Saxon, early medieval and post-medieval features. Among the Saxon features were a number of ditches whose position and alignments are reflected in post-medieval and even modern property boundaries. The finds from these and associated features indicated substantial domestic, craft and agricultural activity in the tenth to eleventh centuries, but considerably less activity in the twelfth century. This may reflect the site's location close to a possible early crossing over the River Avon and the Saxon royal precinct, before a shift in the focus of occupation west towards the High Street, the Abbey and a new bridge. Historical research has also identified the post-medieval and modern development of the site.
