Abstract: Dating problems remain intractable, and the distributions of 8th-century coins and of gold/silver objects overlap only in a small area near Hamwih. The decline in the use of precious metals in 10th-11th centuries may stem from a change of taste as much as a change of supply, an increasing rather than decreasing sophistication, and a tendency to hoard coin and/or bullion rather than to commission ornaments.
