The paper aims to provide an archaeological research framework for the early medieval period in Wales, following on a process initiated in 2001. The strengths, weaknesses, issues and opportunities of archaeological research in Wales covering the period c. AD 400--1070 are outlined under the headings of settlement archaeology; economy, land-use and the exploitation of landscapes and natural resources; and ecclesiastical sites, cemeteries and sculpture, and the issues attached to social and cultural continuity, change and conflict are outlined. | |||||||||
