Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report Abstract:	Examines the potential problems of the long-term curation of archaeological archives against recent changes in archaeological working practice and with regard to systems of funding. The role of the museum in this process is considered, and the respective functions of the archive and published report are analysed. Guidance is sought in PPG 16 and in Management of archaeological projects (see 93/11). It is concluded that there must be greater commitment to national coordination and maintenance of data standards.
