Abstract:		 Excavations in 1988 uncovered a medieval drain and also suggested that the `vallum' incorporated extant IA banks. The report is divided into four parts: the excavation; artefacts; environmental evidence; and a discussion. There are specialist reports on: the `Metalwork' by Ann MacSween & Finbar McCormick (85--8) including iron knives, copper alloy objects, and a silver ?rivet; `Pottery' by Derek W Hall (89--91); `Report on the micromorphology of the buried peat from area 4' by S Carter (91--2); `Palynology of the peat profile buried beneath the vallum bank in area 4' by Richard Tipping (92--5); the mammal bone; `The bird and fish bone' by Jennie Coy & Sheila Hamilton-Dyer (100 & 101). The pre-Columban settlement, unusual rectangular enclosures, and the location of the Columban monastery and monastic graveyard, and the date of artificial `plaggan' soils found across the present Benedictine monastery are discussed.
